Michelle Obama’s VERY Serious Matter!

Our First Lady pushing her agenda...healthy lifestyles via exercise, fruits and veggies!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 2 years, you are already well aware of the First Lady’s fight against childhood obesity.  We’ve all watched her make thought-provoking speeches imploring us to improve our lifestyles, invite children to help her tend to the White House garden and lastly meet with different health groups to find new, creative ways to push her health initiative.

While that all makes me smile and silently applaud her efforts, the news I heard today made my mouth drop open in shock.  While watching CNN (or MSNBC, I forget) this morning I heard reports that Obama has partnered with superstore giant Wal-Mart to gain their support in fighting childhood obesity!  According to the Associated Press,

The company plans to reduce sodium and added sugars in some items, build stores in poor areas that don’t already have grocery stores, reduce prices on produce and develop a logo for healthier items.  “No family should have to choose between food that is healthier for them and food they can afford,” said Bill Simon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart’s U.S. division.

Although this obviously makes sense since Walmart is the largest grocery supplier in the United States, it is no secret that Walmart bends for NO ONE.  They have been heavily criticized for their anti-union policies as well as questionable wages and lack of health insurance benefits.  Despite these major red flags, the retail giant has stayed on top and dominated the game.  This move reflects just how influential our First Lady is, how fiercely dedicated she is to change and lastly, how her fight against childhood obesity is a very serious matter!  (shoutout to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
