Our First Lady has been pushing a healthier lifestle initiative to fight childhood obesity since her and President Obama took office (yes, they did it TOGETHER! lol). Back in January perhaps you remember when I wrote on how she partnered with Wal-Mart to lower their prices of fresh produce. Yesterday she joined forces with the modern-day phenomenon that is best identified by one word: Beyonce!
At Mrs. Obama’s request, Beyonce went back to the studio and recorded a new version of her hit, “Get Me Bodied” that features such common dance moves as The Running Man, The Dougie, high knees, shuffling to the right and left, jumping rope, et al. She now has created a song that doubles as a fun, workout song. A new music video has been shot as well that also serves as the workout tutorial.
This is Beyonce’s video that is very bright, colorful and friendly.
This is the flash workout routine that gives the viewer a better grasp of how (and when) to perform the dance/workout moves.
This video is DEFINITELY being implemented into my little workout routine. My legs have been showing the fruits of my mediocre efforts of calf raises, squats and lunges. I do my actual “work outs” anywhere from 2-5x a week (depending on how I feel and if I remember to do it) and this video will be the intense, 4-min dose of cardio that I’m missing from my current 3-min workouts. And yes, I say all of the above in absolute seriousness (but you all should know me well enough by now to know that I’m dead serious lol).
If you were watching Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address, while President Obama seamlessly captivated his audience, it was our First Lady, who stood fearlessly in the audience, silently cheering her husband on.
Michelle Obama serves as a pillar, upholding her role as the matriarch and backbone to the Obama family legacy. In addition to this, she has also transformed the face of the American woman to the global community; one that is simultaneously domestically nurturing, intellectually savvy and fashionably chic. With such a tremendous undertaking, it is a wonder that she has successfully managed to impact American fashion by putting her own tasteful, yet unique spin on classic looks.
Many of our First Lady’s wardrobe choices pair traditional styles with her personal, modern day twists, usually accented by bright colors, popular textures and bold patterns. Oftentimes when out with President Obama she effortlessly accents his suit and tie combinations which helps present them as a united front. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been taking notes. Below are just a few fashion highlights from the past two years (courtesy of NY Magazine).
Our First Lady pushing her agenda...healthy lifestyles via exercise, fruits and veggies!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 2 years, you are already well aware of the First Lady’s fight against childhood obesity. We’ve all watched her make thought-provoking speeches imploring us to improve our lifestyles, invite children to help her tend to the White House garden and lastly meet with different health groups to find new, creative ways to push her health initiative.
While that all makes me smile and silently applaud her efforts, the news I heard today made my mouth drop open in shock. While watching CNN (or MSNBC, I forget) this morning I heard reports that Obama has partnered with superstore giant Wal-Mart to gain their support in fighting childhood obesity! According to the Associated Press,
The company plans to reduce sodium and added sugars in some items, build stores in poor areas that don’t already have grocery stores, reduce prices on produce and develop a logo for healthier items. “No family should have to choose between food that is healthier for them and food they can afford,” said Bill Simon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart’s U.S. division.
Although this obviously makes sense since Walmart is the largest grocery supplier in the United States, it is no secret that Walmart bends for NO ONE. They have been heavily criticized for their anti-union policies as well as questionable wages and lack of health insurance benefits. Despite these major red flags, the retail giant has stayed on top and dominated the game. This move reflects just how influential our First Lady is, how fiercely dedicated she is to change and lastly, how her fight against childhood obesity is a very serious matter! (shoutout to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Skee-Ooop!)
